When I was little, my great-Grandma
Used to take me down there every spring.
We'd pick herbs
For poultices, and wild greens and mushrooms for canning.
And flowers, just to make things pretty.
She'd explain to me what we was looking for.
How to spot it, when to pick it.
Just like the old indian lady had taught her
When she was a young 'un.
And then, at the end of the day, with our sacks all full,
She'd say, "shush, chrystal,
Listen. Listen good. "
And I'd stand still and listen as hard as I could.
"Can you hear it?
Can you hear them flowers and leaves a'growin'?"
Well, I couldn't hear nothing, but I'd say,
"Oh, yes, grandma, I hear them.
I hear those leaves and those flowers a'growin'."
And she'd just squeeze my little hand
And she'd say,
"I know you will, chrystal. I know you will some day. "
And now I can hear the flowers grow, kalid.
And the sadness of their song just swallows me up.
